[applause] thank you. this, being a sunday morning, i want to begin by saying that this is the data god has made, that us rejoice and be glad. let us rejoice and be glad that as we gather here in the white house, barack obama is being officially sworn in as the president of the united states. earlier this day, joe biden was sworn in as vice president of the united states. tomorrow, it will be a ceremonial, but today it is official. what a great day. what a great day that we are celebrating emily's list success in strength in numbers. women leading the way. isn't that exciting? 15 more women senators in the united states senate. that is remarkable. in this cycle, we have 80 more democratic women in the house bringing our number to 61 women in the house. was on the police officer of the u.s. house this morning. with former speaker nancy pelosi and many others, and the second amendment is part of that, as is the first amendment to speak about what we would like to do and readdress agreements. look at what the president provides. it's troubling to me that the president says if congress doesn't do what i want, i'm iffing to issue an executive order. you know, the power to make laws starts in the house and senate, and that's where we'll take a look at this, but, again, many my district and in many others overwhelmingly people in kansas are not looking for new laws out of washington. they're looking for more involvement in their communities and their families, at the state level rather than the washingtonian law. >> new york state is taking action today. the toughest gun laws in the country. again, if things are not done at the federal level, guns move across state borders very, very easily. doesn't there need to be some federal law? >> there are obviously plenty of laws, and that's one concern i do have is the failure to enforce current laws.

any commitment from democratic leaders like harry reid? nancy pelosi? especially harry reid that they will push the assault weapons ban? >> again, this was addressed earlier. the legislative strategy will be something that is worked out with legislative leaders. the fact is to the president is committed to the renewal of the assault weapons ban. a number of senators are. i think there are a variety of things that we need to have done legislatively, and the president has already put forward some of those in terms of how that plays out, i think we have to wait and see, but he is committed to acting, and you will -- i think you have seen something that reflects that which is, the vice-president, at the president's request, took on this task of bringing people together, formulating proposals and recommendations of the holidays and in the midst of the fiscal clarified and no other physical challenges and debates that we are having with congress and did an extraordinary amount of work in order to present to the president a series of recommendations that he said -- could choose fro

nancy pelosi's speakership. they're playing -- it's the long play. >> i have a question for you. what do you think the polls would have shown before "madd" was organized to have a campaign against drunk driving about whether you could have an open container in your car or whether it's wise to drive after having a couple shooters in a bar. or whether you're going somewhere and somebody in the back seat has a six-pack. what do you think the polls would say about that? >> all of that matters. and i think what the -- undertone of what the president was saying, he has to marshal this kind of cultural battle. it's not automatic. we can sit here in midtown manhattan where everybody would agree with us. but outside of here, not everybody does. in fact, there is an amazing statistic that shows that 23% of people in our poll call the availability of guns as the cause of gun violence compared with 37% who pointed to parenting and 37% who talked about public culture. >> but rick, i've got to bring this up too. i love that you're bringing up counterintuitive polls. but you're saying polls show that 5
